Lupus-Related Kidney Disease

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and affect multiple parts of the body, most commonly the skin, joints, and internal organs. Complications from lupus can cause long term damage to your kidneys. Not all patients with lupus have kidney issues but those that do should see a nephrologist. This condition is referred to as Lupus Nephritis. Lupus Nephritis often causes microscopic blood in the urine, protein in the urine, and abnormal kidney function. There are numerous medications that can be individualized for those with Lupus Nephritis and this can be discussed with a nephrologist.
