Hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition where your blood pressure reading is elevated, typically above 130/80. Often hypertension has no other symptoms unless it is extremely elevated. Even without symptoms hypertension increases the risk of kidney disease, stroke, and heart attacks. Hypertension is the second most common cause of chronic kidney disease. There are different forms of hypertension, primary and secondary. Secondary hypertension is less common and is elevated blood pressure related to another underlying medical problem. Your kidney doctor can determine if you have primary versus secondary hypertension as the treatment options may differ.
