Polycystic Kidney Disease

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic cause of kidney disease. It is the 4th leading cause of kidney failure in the USA. PKD causes numerous cysts on both kidneys and causes the kidneys to enlarge in size. Over time PKD often causes damage to the kidneys and a decrease in kidney function. While there is no cure for PKD there are medications that a nephrologist can prescribe to decrease the progression of PKD. PKD may also causes cysts elsewhere in the body such as the liver and pancreas most commonly. If you have PKD your family members should also be screened and see a nephrologist.
